Another device used in Jazz improvising is so-called
“floating.” The idea is to play some notes that are not in time, almost as if
you lost track of the beat, after which you play notes that are in time as you
normally do but you need to really emphasize the time when you do. This is just
another way of adding some interest to your solo.
